Assistant Professorship (all genders) - Tenure Track

"AI in Mechanics"

TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.

At the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering TU Wien, Institute of Structural Engineering, is offering the following tenure track position, limited, for 40 hours/week. Expected start: April 2026.

The work contract is initially limited to six years. The candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor (all genders) with an unlimited contract.

The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute of Structural Engineering. Duties include research and teaching in the field of Mechanics and Structural Dynamics. The new tenure track position is motivated and conceptualized as follows: Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently understood as a main driver of the ongoing societal transformation, with large language models appearing as the most impressive examples pervading every-day life. Their success stems from huge data sources and unprecedented computer power. The same ingredients have fueled renewed interest in AI-approaches for the traditional engineering fields and its oldest theoretical backbone: mechanics.

Particularly in civil engineering, structured data is often scarce. This motivates a specific form of AI-enabled progress, through integration of domain expertise, physics-based models, simulation-driven learning, and sensor data processing.

The new tenure track position at TU Wien targets identification and effective tackling of the great challenges in this rapidly developing field. Therefore, TU Wien searches excellent, internationally visible candidates with proven track-record and original ideas on the effective combination of mechanics and AI, in a broad civil and environmental engineering perspective. TU Wien is currently expanding its existing Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML) into an interdisciplinary Center for Artificial Intelligence in Science and Engineering (CAISE). In addition, a Vienna AI Center is being established in collaboration with the
University of Vienna.

Corresponding efforts may include (but are not limited to) different engineering fields, such as structural design, structural optimization, bionics, structural health monitoring, structural dynamics, and earthquake engineering; various AI-methods, such as artificial neural networks (including causal, convolutional, deep, recurrent, physics-guided), genetic algorithms, random forests, classical and symbolic regression, theory-driven machine learning, large language models, and support vector machines; pertinent applied mathematics topics, such as computational mechanics, inverse analysis, partial differential equations, stochastics, surrogate modeling; as well as data availability, security-related issues, and ethics with AI in mechanics.

Tasks:

Research:

  • Internationally competitive research activities related to the aforementioned great challenges
  • Research cooperation with stakeholders in the industry
  • Willingness to support the establishment of the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Science and Engineering (CAISE) and to participate in the Vienna AI Center

Teaching:

  • The successful candidate will teach in the Bachelor and Master curricula. It is emphasized that the teaching in the Bachelor curriculum is in German language. Corresponding language requirements may be part of the qualification agreement.

Besides research and teaching, the duties include the contribution to usual management and faculty service tasks.

Your profile:

  • University Master and Doctoral degree or equivalent and proficiency in German and English
  • Proven expertise concerning AI and mechanics.
  • Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
  • Experience in academic teaching and (co)-supervising of academic theses
  • Experience in designing and participating in research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups, willingness to acquire third-party funding
  • Scientific activity outside TU Wien, preferentially outside Austria
  • If there is no sufficient knowledge of German, the willingness to learn the German language in an adequate amount of time is required, which enables participation in the management of the institute, the faculty and in university committees, as well as teaching in Bachelor studies. English language skills at level B2 are required.

We offer:

  • A wide variety and exciting range of tasks in a collegial team
  • Hybrid working style with up to 60% teleworking option
  • A range of attractive social benefits (see Fringe-Benefits)
  • Wide range of internal and external training opportunities, various career options
  • Central location of workplace as well as good accessibility (U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz)
TU Wien is committed to increasing the proportion of women in particular in leadership positions. Female applicants are explicitly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to women when equally qualified, unless reasons specific to a male applicant tilt the balance in his favour.

People with special needs are equally encouraged to apply. In case of any questions, please contact the confidant for disabled persons at the university, Mr. Gerhard Neustätter.

The employment starts as University Assistant with a minimum salary of EUR 4,932.90 gross (14 x per year) according to the collective bargaining agreement for a PostDoc. After signing the qualification agreement, the employment continues as Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of EUR 5,808.20 gross (14 x per year).

We look forward to receiving your application until December 18th, 2025.
The application (in English) should include the following files:
