10 Doctoral Positions (Prae-Doc)
30 hours/week | limited to 4 years
We are pleased to announce 10 open doctoral positions within the framework of the Doctoral College Computational Sustainability, funded by the BMFWF. The positions start on March 1st 2026 and run for four (4) years.
The Doctoral College Computational Sustainability is a collaboration between TU Wien and JKU Linz, offering 15 interdisciplinary research projects in areas such as:
- Sustainable Computing
- Computing for Sustainable Material Science
- (Hybrid) Quantum Systems
- Behavioral Change Management for Sustainable Computing
Each project will be supervised by at least two professors from the relevant disciplines and institutions, ensuring a strong interdisciplinary foundation.

The goal of the Doctoral College is to train outstanding young researchers who will develop innovative solutions in the emerging field of computational sustainability. Note: At the time of the application deadline, the candidate must not have been employed as a doctoral candidate at TU Wien for more than 12 months.
Tasks:
- Deepen scientific knowledge and independent research work on the specific project
- Presentation of research results at international conferences and other scientific events
- Successful completion of important milestones
- Participation in scientific events and other outreach activities organized by TU Wien and JKU
- Writing a dissertation and publications
- Participation in organizational and administrative tasks of the doctoral college, TU Wien and the respective Faculties
- Teaching obligations, student guidance and involvement in student supervision
- Assistance with thesis supervision
- Participation in scientific events
Your profile:
- A diploma or master university degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, data science, material science, physics or a related discipline - depending on the research project(s) you are applying for- , and completed latest December 4, 2025. - Experience in relevant research fields of the selected project(s) are of advantage
- Excellent communication and writing skills in English
- Knowledge of German (level B2) or willingness to learn it
- Active participation in scientific collaborations
- Team competences and problem-solving skills

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 2,786.10/month gross, 14 times/year for 30 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.

- A cover letter stating the 3 preferred research projects from the list of research projects, please rank and give motivation for your choices
- A one-page summary of the diploma/master thesis (+add more documents)
- Bachelor's and Master's degree certificates, if the degree certificate is not yet available, progress statement from the supervisor
- Transcripts of records of the Bachelor- and Master-studies
- Two letters of reference (e.g., by your MSc thesis advisor)
After the initial screening process, selected applicants will be invited by December 19 to give a brief presentation (either in person or online) of their previous research. Additionally, the selected candidates will have to give a presentation on an article relevant to their selected research project. The article will be sent to the selected candidates one week prior to the hearings. Hearings will be held on January 12 and 13, 2026.
