Communication networks are essential to ensure the reliable and secure operation of vital services, such as energy supply, transportation, security services, public health, and many more. Malfunctions or attacks on critical infrastructure communication can disrupt essential functions in a modern society, endanger public safety, and risk human lives. Challenges are the incooperation of different communication technologies in specialized architectures and the provioning of highly reliable, predictable communication services with low latencies and high security demands.
Tasks:
Research:
- Protocols and architectures for communication networks with a focus on the network and transport layer (IP, TCP, SCTP, QUIC, etc.)
- Network security with a focus on secure architectures for communication networks, network monitoring, anomaly detection
- Protocols and architectures for secure communication in critical infrastructures with a focus on smart grid communication
- Passive and active measurement methods in communication networks (focus on network and transport layer)
Teaching:
- Compulsory and elective courses (lectures, tutorials, laboratories) in the field of communication networks. It is emphasized that currently the teaching in the Bachelor curriculum is in German language requiring appropriate language skills.
- Supervision and Co-Supervision of student research projects (Bachelor, Master and PhD theses).

- Knowledge and experience in the field of network data analysis, statistical data analysis, machine learning, as well as architectures, methods and tools for the evaluation of large amounts of data
- Knowledge and experience in the field of secure smart grid architectures and communication protocols for smart grids (M2M communication, secure time synchronization, communication for smart meters, phasor measurements, EV charging, etc.)
- Experience with network simulation tools (ns2, ns3, NETinVM)
- Practical experience in the field of communication networks, network design, secure laboratory environments for research and teaching
