University Professor

Specialist field of Process Control

TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.
At the Institute of Automation and Control (E376) at TU Wien, the position of a University Professor in the field of Process Control with permanent (full-time) contractual employment is to be filled as of March 2025.

This is a professorship according to section 99, para. 4 of the 2002 Universities Act (UG). The position is intended for Associate Professors (§ 27 of the collective agreement) from TU Wien only.

The position as professor for Process Control has been allocated in TU Wien's development plan to the following TU Focal Areas of Research: “Computational Science and Engineering”, “Materials and Matter”, “Information and Communication Technology”, and “Energy and Environment”.

Research at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology covers micro- and nano-electronics, photonics, sensor technology, systems engineering and automation, energy technology, energy systems, and telecommunications. The Automation and Control Institute conducts fundamental and applied research in the fields of automation, metrology and scientific instrumentation, robotic systems, and industrial robots, as well as modeling, optimization, and control of complex dynamical systems.

The professorship should develop further and expand the research activities of the institute in the field of Process Control. The professorship should cover the following scientific areas:
  • Physics-based, hybrid, and data-driven modeling and model identification for production processes
  • Optimization-based design of observers and estimators for non-measurable process variables, fault detection, monitoring of plant states
  • Machine learning, data-driven, learning, adaptive, and optimization-based control methods for production processes
  • Real-time control of product and material properties
  • Static, dynamic, and combinatorial optimization
  • Optimal design of production plants and optimal scheduling of production processes

The research results are to be realized and tested also in the form of practical applications in various industrial areas. The professorship should promote research cooperation projects with developers and operators of industrial production processes. The responsibilities of the offered position also include active participation in academic committees, active contribution to academic self-government, as well as research-guided teaching for Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programs (in German and English).
