University Assistant Prae-Doc (all genders)

30 hours/week | limited to 4 years

At the Institute of Applied Physics, in the Research Unit of Surface Physics TU Wien is offering a position as university assistant (prae-doc) limited to expected 4 years for 30 hours/week. Expected start: September 2025.

Tasks:

  • Investigations on oxide surfaces to capture processes at the atomic level. Applying various methods of surface physics, particularly Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), non-contact Atomic Force Microscopy (nc-AFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Temperature-Programmed Desorption (TPD), etc.
  • Independent work on a UHV system, overseeing the system (maintenance, modifications, minor repairs, etc.)
  • Handling of cryogenic liquids
  • Participate in scientific conferences, workshops, and events to present research findings and engage with the academic community
  • Write and publish scientific papers and complete a PhD dissertation
  • Contribute to teaching activities, including supporting courses and mentoring students
  • Supervise and collaborate with students in research projects and international collaborations

Your profile:

  • Education: Master’s or diploma degree in Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related field
  • Research Competencies: Strong ability for independent, methodical, and responsible research, ideally with knowledge in the field of surface physics and experience with surface physical methods
  • Language Skills: Excellent oral and written English skills
  • Motivation: Enthusiasm for research and innovation, with an interest in both scientific discovery and practical applications. Interest in experimental work
  • Collaboration and Mentoring: Enjoyment of teamwork, mentoring students, and contributing to a dynamic research environment
  • Soft Skills: Analytical thinking, strong problem-solving skills, an open communication style, and the ability to work creatively and collaboratively. Sensitivity to diversity

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 2,786.10/month gross, 14 times/year for 30 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.
