Specialist field of Integral Building Technology

At the Institute of Building and Industrial Construction of Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at TU Wien, the position of a University Professor in the field of Integral Building Technology with permanent (full-time) contractual employment is to be filled as of January 2024.

This is a professorship regulated by § 98 of the 2002 Universities Act (UG). The position as professor for Integral Building Technology has been allocated in TU Wien's development plan to the following TU Focal Area(s) of Research: Materials and Matter, Energy and Environment, Additional Fields of Research: Urban and Regional Transformation.

Replacing fossil fuels with zero carbon and low emission alternatives is an urgent priority for all economies and sectors. The climate change mitigation as well as current increasing of energy prices and uncertainties of energy markets makes achievement of energy efficiency and decarbonization more imperative than ever. Building sector, as one of the most intensive energy consumers offers significant saving potentials. The buildings of the future represent not only housing, working or living environment with increased requirements on individualised user-comfort and functionality, but more over will evolute from energy-consumers to prosumers – Smart Technologies act as enabler in this context.

The positioning of the Professorship for Integral Building Technology at the Institute for Building and Industrial Construction, which comprises two further Departments – for Integrated Planning and Industrial Building and for Building Construction and Building Preservation, enables development of innovative concepts and methods for planning and construction of energy and resources efficient buildings. The application of this holistic, systemic approach allows design of intelligent, sustainable buildings at the interface of building-, energy- and information technology.

This professorship is meant to position and nurture the Integrated Building Technology field of research in an international context for Smart Buildings, Smart Technologies, Renewable energy and Carbon Neutral Buildings.

In addition to research, the duties of a university professor at TU Wien also include teaching in Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programmes as well as collaboration in the management of the institute and the faculty.

Your profile:

  • Completed doctoral or PhD studies in the relevant subject (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, System Engineering) from a domestic or equivalent foreign university or research institution or achievement of an equivalent scientific/architectural qualification
  • Expert knowledge and high profile in the field of innovative building service technologies for carbon neutral buildings
  • Competence in the holistic climate design, integrating building service technologies, building structure and user needs
  • The qualification for teaching (venia docendi) acquired at a domestic or equivalent foreign university or an academic qualification recognisable as being equivalent to the venia docendi
  • High scientific reputation, proven by publications in internationally reknowned scientific journals, patents, scientific lectures, editorial and expert work, organization of conferences, prices etc.
  • Ability to form networks, proven e.g. by extended relevant stays abroad and/or through cooperation with foreign and domestic universities and research institutions
  • Experience in the acquisition, execution and management of research projects
  • The ability and willingness to manage a research division or a research group
  • Pedagogic and didactic suitability for academic teaching in the relevant subject in German and/or English
  • Experience in the supervision of scientific work of students
  • The prospective position holder has social and gender competence and experience in the promotion of young researchers and the advancement of female students/colleagues/employees
  • Willingness to move the centre of life to Vienna (On-site presence)
  • In case there is no adequate knowledge of German, willingness to quickly learn German is presupposed for teaching in bachelor programmes and participation in management of the institute and the faculty as well as in university bodies


Additional competences:
  • Experience and participation in real life integrated, interdisciplinary construction projects with ambitioned energy efficiency aim setting and innovative technologies
  • Competences in innovative building services technologies: coupling of heating, cooling, ventilation, water and waste water as well as electrical engineering and building automation
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge of the interactions and synergies of the building technology systems and building hull
  • Skills and competences in model and simulation-based HVAC planning, energy modelling and simulation and interdisciplinary data exchange
  • Understanding of buildings as powerplants and interactions with urban environment

Classification in the pay grade A1 of the collective bargaining agreement for employees of universities and a minimum salary of EUR 81.571,00 gross annual is provided for. Furthermore, on top of the employee benefit fund, a company pension scheme will be set up for employees, with the result that personnel benefits will increase. A higher salary depending on qualifications and experience is subject of appointment negotiations as well as detailed information about benefits.
