Assistant Professorship (m_f) - Tenure Track

for the specialised field of Flexible, Modular Production Systems and System Arcitectures

At the Institute of Production Engineering and Photonic Technologies, in the Research Group for Control Technology and Integrated Systems TU Wien is offering the following tenure track position until 31.08.2027 for 40 hours/week. Expected start: September 2021.

The candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibility to change the position to Associate Professor with an unlimited contract.

The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute of Production Engineering and Photonic Technologies (E311), Research Unit “Production Engineering” (E311-01). Duties include research and teaching in the field of flexible, modular Production Systems and System Arcitectures. The focus of research should be on the development of concepts concerning the control of agile manufacturing systems based on pragmatic and semantic interoperability.


  • Behavioral modeling and simulation of automated manufacturing systems
  • Transformation of machine tools, machine tool components, sensors and automation components into Industry 4.0 components
  • Development of Industry 4.0 conforming communication for active and passive assets based on OPC Unified Architecture as groundwork for reconfigurable manufacturing systems
  • Development of concepts concerning the control of agile manufacturing systems based on pragmatic and semantic interoperability
  • Development of concepts for the seamless integration of agile manufacturing systems into the MES and ERP layer
  • Collection, preprocessing, merging and storage of sensor readings and machine control data for future analysis and optimization based on Machine Learning
  • Administrative activities in research

  • The successful candidate will teach automation and control engineering in classes and lab courses of the Master curricula Mechanical Engineering as well as Mechanical Engineering – Economics

Your profile:

  • University Master and Doctoral degree (Mechanical Engineering, specialization in automation technology) or equivalent and proficiency in German (level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and English
  • Proven expertise in manufacturing technology and industrial manufacturing systems for machining, manufacturing execution systems, automation and control engineering (NC, PLC), industrial communication, ontology development, modeling of processes and finite state machines as well as information modeling for OPC Unified Architecture
  • Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
  • Experience in academic teaching (classes and lab courses) and supervising or co-supervising of academic theses
  • Ability to cooperate with research groups of TU Wien as well as with national and international research partners
  • Experience in research collaborations with the private sector
  • Experience in designing and participating in research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups, willingness to acquire third-party funding
  • International experience in the context of research stays is desirable

The employment starts as University Assistant with a minimum salary of EUR 3,945.90 gross (14 x per year) according to the collective bargaining agreement for a PostDoc. After signing the qualification agreement, the employment continues as Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of EUR 4,666.30 gross (14 x per year).
